Vijay and Ajith’s films ‘Varisu’ and ‘Thunivu’ are locked to have a box office battle this Pongal, and both films are releasing on Jan 11. Both films are made on a massive budget, and the bookings for both have been heated up. Now, let’s look at the ‘Varisu’ vs ‘Thunivu’ clash, and Vijay’s film leads Ajith starrer in the pre-release business with 100 crores. According to the trade report, ‘Varisu’ theatrical rights have been sold for Rs 70 crores, Rs 6.5 crores, Rs 8 crores, and Rs 35 crores respectively in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and overseas. Whereas the Hindi version has been sold for Rs 34 crore, and the OTT rights have been sold for Rs 70 crore. The total pre-release business of ‘Varisu’ aggregates around Rs 295 crores. On the other hand, Ajith’s ‘Thunivu’ has been sold for Rs 60 crores, Rs 2.5 crores, Rs 3.6 crores, and R 4 crores respectively in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and overseas. The OTT rights of the Ajith starrer have been locked for Rs 65 crores, and the film has reportedly earned a total of Rs 194 crores in the pre-release business. Comparingly, ‘Varisu’ has earned over Rs 100 crores more than ‘Thunivu’ in the pre-release business, and Vijay wins the second set to tie with Ajith after losing the trailer battle in the first set. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, ‘Varisu’ featuring Vijay will be an emotional family drama. On the other hand, H Vinoth’s directorial ‘Thunivu’ featuring Ajith will be a heist thriller packed with action sequences. It’s going to be two different genres from Ajith and Vijay, and both films are set to rock the box office for this Pongal.
